First "Chromezone" Google Stores open for biz
OTOH: Get hands-on with a Chromebook at PC World

Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) is dipping its toe in the chilly, shark-infested waters of retail. The first of "several" Chromezones have opened in London and Essex, as shop-within-a-shop concessions inside of PC World/Currys. But the only thing they sell is the cloud-based Chromebook laptops.
- On the one hand, Google's got a long way to go to compete with Apple Stores.
- On The Other Hand... well, you've got to start somewhere, right?

Anna Leach reports:
Staff [said] that they had shifted "quite a few" of the £349/£399 mini-laptops since the Google Shop...opened on Thursday night. One...said that it had been so busy at the weekend they'd had to double up...to deal with the Google fans wanting to get hands-on.
...
The outlet is run within PC World/Curry's shops and demonstrate Google just dipping its toe in the world of...retail. Consisting of 12 Chromebooks...the store in Tottenham Court Road is kitted out in Google colours. ... [It's] the first of several...there are plans to roll them out across the country.
Gareth Halfacree adds:
Google is clearly channelling Apple here: its products - namely variations on the...Chromebook semi-laptop - are laid out [to] encourage buyers to have a poke around, while the minimalist decoration contains plenty of instances of the Chrome logo. .
...
Google isn't leaving the potential success of the Chromebook concept up to its hardware partners.
And Matt Brown has a similar thought:
Clearly, this is no Apple Store killer. Not yet. The London opening is...a beta release, if you will, of things to come.
...
This is Google’s second London connection in a week, following their announcement of a new tech incubator near the Old Street roundabout.
Oh, wait, perhaps this isn't strictly the "first" Google store, says David Meyer:
The company has had a shop before, but that was within its own campus in California.
...
Chromebooks such as Samsung's Series 5 are cloud-centric...laptops...that rely on near-constant internet connectivity to support...web-based applications.
But Luke Westaway craves more:
If you don't live near London but do live near Essex, you'll be chuffed to know there's another...opening today in...Lakeside.
Meanwhile, Roberto Baldwin pens an off-colour title, and goes on to quip thricewise:
I hope they remembered to replace the $ key with a £ key.
...
It’s your one-stop-shop for exactly one device.
...
They’ve also hired dedicated staff so you won’t be talking to the stereo guy.
