Gartner Comments on the Rise of Open Source
Published 11:44, 22 May 08
Mark Driver of Gartner was quoted yesterday on the use of open source technology as a competitive differentiator.
Meanwhile, Mark Driver, an analyst with Gartner, said that with the use of open-source technology increasing, "Vendors will continue to leverage this movement by embedding open source into products, while end-user organizations will use stable open-source projects as a competitive differentiator against companies that refuse to acknowledge that open source is now enterprise-ready. By 2012, 80 percent or more of all commercial software will include elements of open-source technology."
Gartner on the Rise of Open Source
One of the findings from the Open Source Barometer was a clear leader at each level in the enterprise stack - operating system, database, application server, enterprise content management, business intelligence, portal, CRM ...
These leaders are the "stable" open source projects that enterprises run their businesses on.
Open source is enterprise ready and has been for some time. Just go to the biggest banks, the leading websites, the leading web 2.0 and social networking sites and even Google and you'll find they're powered by open source.
